My Story of Struggle and My Rise Above Money Problems (Audio)

I have to be honest with you...

I know what it feels like to be without cash.

I've been there before and it's NOT funny at all.

Some people look at me now and think I'm an ajebota (i.e. aje butter- yoruba for "pampered child"- someone raised with a silver spoon)

But when I was growing, my parents were definitely not millionaires.

They were diligent, honest and industrious civil servants who had a few business ventures on the side and I'm super-grateful to have been raised by them.

However, they didn't have tons of cash to cater to my every want and wish so I was well-acquainted with phrases like "Money doesn't grow on trees" and "It's not easy to make money" and similar phrases that inadvertently limited my ability to master my money.

As I grew older, I ran into several embarrassing situations because I didn't have enough money:

-There was a time I had to "squat" with a friend- I had to share an apartment without paying because I just didn't have enough money.

-I had to walk for several miles to church because I didn't have enough money and I just refused to beg- it's never been my style. Call it pride, I call it self-respect!

-There was a time I wore the same pair of shoes so often- till the soles began to wear thin. If shoes could talk, mine would have said something like "Bros!!! Na wa for you. You no even make pesin rest" LOL!

-This one is so shameful- there were a few times I decided to "fast by force" just because I didn't have sufficient cash to buy the kind of meal I wanted.

In 2007, it occurred to me that I had to take responsibility for my life and my finances and I did!
